Latitude 30 degrees north, known as the world’s most dangerous road with distinctive fascinating scenery, Sichuan-Tibet Highway (via G318 National Highway) is an extraordinary way to experience the imposing Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the history and culture of Tibet as well. This epic road trip covers 2250km in around 8 days. You will depart from Chengdu, the gateway city to Tibet, and pass lofty mountain passes along eastern ridge of Tibetan Plateau. This overland journey allows you to see the deepest ravines in the world and takes you to experience Tibetan culture and history.

    Detailed Itinerary

    Chengdu

    Day 1: Arrival in Chengdu.

    Our guide will pick you up at the Shuangliu International Airport and escort you to hotels. After that, you can have a good rest or you can take a relaxing stroll on the streets near your hotels. In the evening, there will be a reception dinner for all of you. Then we will inform you the details of this 11-day journey after dinner.

    Chengdu - Ya’an - Luding - Kangding - Xinduqiao

    Day 2: Zheduo Mountain

    At 7 am, we will leave for Xinduqiao via Ya’an by car. As we travel against Dadu River, upper reaches of Yangtze River, we will encounter the first soaring peak on Tibetan Plateau, Zheduo Mountain (mountain pass 4298m). Then we will keep driving westward and finally end up in Xinduqiao, known as Macca for photography.

    Day 3: Xinduqiao Bridge, Ke’er Temple, Haizi Mountain

    You will never be disappointed at Xinduqiao, the heaven for photography. We will pass picturesque small bridges, peaceful local villages, exotic Tibetan houses, and yellow poplar trees, while moving westwards to raging ravine of Yalong River and exuberant forest.
    After encountering with the famous Ya River, we will finally reach Litang, a city located on Qinghai-Tibetan plateau with an altitude of around 4000 meters. Litang is a natural grassland on the plateau. Grazing yaks, sheep and nomad’s tents scattering across the massive pasture are the most common scene.
    Besides, another popular and renowned tourist attraction in Litang is Ke’er Monastery, a prestigious Gelugpa Monastery on this lively pasture. After our visit in Litang, we will travel through Haizishan Mountain (4700m) and venture into menacing valley regions, and by night we should make it to Batang County.

    Day 4: Lawu Mountain, Dongda Mountain

    Today, we officially step onto the soil of the holy Tibet Autonomous Region. As wide as 300 km, our tour vehicle will move into regions where Jinsha River, Lancang River and Nu River flow in parallel. This part of the road is regarded as the most difficult section.
    Then, we continue our journey westward and pass Lawu Mountain (4358m) and Dongda Mountain (5008m). Standing atop of imposing mountain passes, covered with snow, the spectacular and unforgettable view of zigzag Sichuan-Tibet highway and incredible Lancang River will be embedded in your heart forever. By night, we will reach the city of Zogong. (260km)

    Day 5: Bangda Grassland, Yela Mountain, Nu River Seventy-two Bends

    Today, we head for our next destination—Bangda Grassland, known as the most significant natural pasture in eastern Tibet. Flocks of sturdy yaks, horses, and sheep and other wildlife inhabit on the boundless grassland, where a gentle river runs through. After a short tour in enchanting Bangda Grassland, we are expected to travel across Yela Mountain(4839m), the most dangerous natural barrier on Hengduan Mountain Range. Then we will move downward via famous Seventy-two Bends to the shore of Nu River.
    Further moving westward, soaring snow mountains, pristine forest and idyllic Tibetan villages begin to engulf us. By night, we will arrive at Rakwa Ts (200km)

    Rakwa Tso - Midui Glacier - Parlung Tsangpo - Bomi

    Day 6: Rakwa Tso Lake, Midui Glacier

    Rakwa Tso is a typical seasonal glacial lake in Chamdo and serves as the source of Parlung Tsangpo Lake. The narrow strip of river stretches westward for about 10 km and slowly winds up in a giant and imposing canyon.
    From Rakwa Tso, following the scenic road amid thick forest and turbulent Parlung Tsangpo, we will reach today’s final destination—Bomi. On the way, tourists can visit stunning Midui Glacier, gaining its fame as the most beautiful glacier in China. (250km)

    Day 7: Canyon of Parlung Tsangpo, Lulang Forest, Zhaxigang Village, Mt. Namcha Barwa, Sejila Mountain Pass

    Following an open and wide valley (2km wide, 5km long), we move into the canyon of Parlung Tsangpo—the deepest ravine on our planet. After that, we will head to the renowned and enchanting Lulang Forest, which covers an area of 15 square kilometers on the plateau. This region is blanketed with vibrant shrubs, spruces and pine trees. Besides, we will visit the Zhaxigang Village, an iconic Tibetan village in Lulang, where you can meet the locals and enjoy the local snacks, etc.
    Standing on the viewing platform of Lulang, you will be able to enjoy the panorama of Mt. Namcha Barwa(7782m), which is among the most imposing mountains in China. Then we will make a brief stop at Sejila Mountain Pass (4728m). Passing Seijila Mountain Pass, we continue to move westward and eventually arrive in Nyingchi, the biggest city in eastern Tibet.

    Day 8: Nyang River, Mila Pass

    Still, we will keep moving west, following Nyang River, a tributary of Yarlung Tsangpo River. After Mila Pass(5013m), the last mountain pass during the road trip, we will finally enter Lhasa valley. Shortly after Dagzê County, the magnificent Potala Palace perched on Red Hill will catch your eye. Then finally, you will reach hotels, where you can have a good rest and adjust yourselves to the thin air. (420km)
